HidingInTheSpotlightBookZhanna Arshanskaya Dawson was already a proficient pianist at 14, when the German army came to Ukraine to round up the citizenry and march them off to death camps. The young girl and her sister escaped into the forest, and they remain the only known survivors of the more than 16,000 people who died during the German occupation of Ukraine.

That’s the beginning of the extraordinary story told in the new book, Hiding in the Spotlight, written by Zhanna’s son Greg Dawson. NPR’s Weekend Edition yesterday featured an interview with Dawson – here’s the whole story.
