gracias a la vida, mercedes

Mercedes SosaThe news reached me late in the afternoon last Sunday, and – like news of this kind always does – it was a shock. For someone whose voice, whose message and presence is timeless, how could she be gone?

Her family sent notice worldwide that Argentinian singer and activist Mercedes Sosa had passed away earlier that day, at 74.

The story I heard encapsulated what made her so special: she stood up to generals and tanks with nothing but her voice, and her guitar.

This week’s World of Music is dedicated to Mercedes Sosa, and we’ll hear her iconic anthem, “Gracias a la Vida” – “thank you to life, which has given me so much.” Rest well, Mercedes, and know you made a difference.

World of Music is blues, jazz, poetry, and world music every Monday on the Radiator, 3-5pm ET. Online, or at 105.9FM in Burlington, VT.
