la explosion

October 25, 2010

Chucho Valdés is in New England this week for a couple of concerts. He’s playing with the Afro-Cuban Messengers, one of the jazz quartets he’s been working with over the last three decades or so. Next stop: the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College tomorrow night, 7pm.

This is a good video for some background:

walk around the world

October 25, 2010

This week’s World of Music is a non-thematic journey through new recordings from Macedonia, Curaçao, India and beyond. Vibes man Mike Manieri has a new release, recorded live in Europe – Trinary Motion also features guitarist Marmix Busstra and a great band. We’re not quite done with the cover tunes yet, the last two shows have been dedicated to world music cover tunes and we have a couple more to share including an Israeli/Spanish cover of the Animals’ Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.

World of Music is a fearless trek of blues, poetry, jazz, and international music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator. Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

heavenly

October 18, 2010

I’d never heard this version of Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” until recently when I was doing a little digging to find some good international cover tunes to play on the show. I grew up listening to Dolly Parton (“Coat of Many Colors” is still a favorite) but it never really occurred to me to think of her as soulful.  Until now.

This is kind of a goofy, psychedelic video – but listen. Just listen.

undercover

October 17, 2010

We had so much fun on last week’s World of Music playing international cover versions of popular songs, we’re going to do it again this week in part five of the occasional series “under the covers”.

Listen in for twisted flamenco versions of Tom Jones’ “No es nada extraño” (It’s Not Unusual), and Lou Reed’s “El Lado Más Bestia de la Vida” (Take a Walk on the Wild Side) – along with groups from Senegal, Oceania, and Vietnam covering everything from Bach to Jimi Hendrix.

World of Music is a fully covered patchwork of blues, poetry, jazz, and international music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator. Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

getting cozy

October 10, 2010

With the cooler temps and chilly breezes off the Lake these days I thought it was about time for another in our occasional ‘under the covers’ series.

These week’s World of Music features international covers of everything from the Beatles and Dylan, to Beethoven and Prince and classics like the swinging tunes, “Besame Mucho” and “Cuban Pete”. If the recent bright fall sunshine isn’t quite enough to keep you warm, the dancing this show inspires sure will!

World of Music is a comforting, wool sock/hot apple cider autumn cocktail of blues, poetry, jazz, and international music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator. Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

orchestrion

October 10, 2010

Excerpted report from a friend who attended Pat Metheny’s “Orchestrion” concert this past Tuesday evening at Burlington’s Flynn Center:

” … it was incredible! Initially I was just taken aback by his acoustic guitar playing and then hollow-body guitar playing (his ability to solo forever and outline complex changes is really second to none.) He also busted out what he calls a “picasso guitar”, it had a harp and two other sets of strings besides the main 6, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Following that, I don’t even know what to say about how cool his whole Orchestrion setup and Suite of music he wrote for it was. I pretty much had my jaw dropped the whole time as he controlled an entire orchestra through his guitar! And I’m still trying to replay the show in my head and figure out what everything was! Anyway, it was an amazing experience…”

in autumn

October 10, 2010

Vermont autumns are a colorful symphony of overflowing farmer’s markets, busy roadside general stores (every little town seems to have one) and the last of the outdoor music before the season knuckles down for real and frigid winds drive even the most resolute folks inside.

It goes beyond the classically quaint red maple/white steeple charm of every New England calendar you’ve ever seen. It’s a feeling. It’s everywhere. And it’s joyous on the wholly visceral level of warm pumpkin pie, woodsmoke in the evening air, and waterfalls of golden leaves falling on your shoulders during a walk in the woods.

Recent roadtrips recently have included visits to the thriving Montpelier farmer’s market (Saturdays summer through October), the Stowe Farmer’s market (mid-May through mid-October), and the historic, always entertaining general store/café in Rochester (where Robert Frost famously frequented the soda fountain in the summer heat).

I’ve heard everything from Celtic harp and flute duets to edgy Americana bluegrass played by local groups whose livelihood is closely tied to the farmer’s market culture here. While the markets are certainly about fresh, locally-cultivated fruits and vegetables they’re also about local art and friends and neighbors getting together once a week just for fun.

Enjoy all that the season has to offer, and do tell me about your favorite fall places to visit.
