on point: the global beat

November 29, 2010

There was an interesting show recently on Tom Ashbrook’s On Point – he talked with a couple of ethnomusicologists about Javanese gamelan music. If you’re not familiar with the gamelan, you may find it a surprising listening experience the first time. The gamelan is a metal orchestra including various bells, gongs, xylophones and drums. It’s both melodic and clamorous, and capable of producing a remarkable variety and depth of music. This show digs in to the history and traditions of gamelan – good stuff, see what you think.

November 28, 2010

Thanksgiving – past, already? It is, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t enjoy some of the offerings from this year’s harvest of new recordings.

This week’s World of Music features new music from France and Colombia, with a hot new recording of remixes from Brazil’s Luisa Maíta. We’ll also hear from Syrian songstress Gaida, and an artist who’s visiting Burlington’s Flynn Theater later this winter – from India, Kailash Kher. It’s going to be fun!

World of Music is a harvest feast of blues, poetry, jazz, and international music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator. Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

autumn leaves

November 22, 2010

It’s that time of the year. A little past, actually. But while we’re still in that transitional time between fall and winter here’s a juicy bit from 1966 with little Alex Riel, Eddie Gomez (listen to that BASS solo!) and Bill Evans.

pitz & shrimp

November 22, 2010

It’s November 22nd – National Didgeridoo Day. The first time I celebrated the day was a couple of years ago, in Montpelier with Adamant didgeridoo artist Pitz Quattrone and his Earthman Band. Last year the occasion was honored by a visit from Pitz on my weekly radio show, World of Music. And this year too! Except today he came with a guitar playing partner: Pitz and Shrimp played an energetic half-hour set of originals including “Movin’ “, “Three Americas”, and “Electric Tan”. We talked about the didgeridoo, their duo act, and a couple of gigs and other special projects they have coming up. Most of all we enjoyed some great, groovy music together. I don’t know what I’ll be doing next year for National Didge day, but I hope it’s as fun as the last few have been.

You can catch Pitz and Shrimp at the Vermont International Festival in two sets – 11am and 2pm, on Saturday Dec. 4th at the Champlain Valley Expo in Essex.

pitz on didge

November 21, 2010

It’s been a year since we checked in with Adamant didgeridoo artist Pitz Quattrone. Nov. 22nd is national Didgeridoo Day, and he’ll return to this week’s World of Music with a guitar-playing partner. Together Shrimp & Pitz bring a pocketful of new tunes and exciting news about their latest project together.

We’ll also spend some time with new releases picked up at is year’s WOMAD and WOMEX world music conferences including Francis Mbappe from Cameroon, Montreal’s premier party band Oztara, and Zafa: Funky grooves of Yemen!

World of Music is a roasted root casserole of blues, poetry, jazz, and international music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator. Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

dailey & vincent

November 20, 2010

Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent

I’ve been to many shows at Burlington’s Flynn Theatre but few as purely entertaining as the one this week.

Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent brought their bluegrass sextet to the Flynn stage on Tuesday night in a tight 90-minute set that included gospel, Americana, and originals delivered with some of the best 4-part harmony I have ever heard. It was a profoundly virtuosic display wrapped up in equal parts camaraderie, showmanship, and pure spunk.

Sure, the hokey humor (bald jokes, short jokes – mostly at the expense of Vincent) wore a bit thin, threadbare seatcovers somewhat out of place in an otherwise leather package Cadillac. Even the band seemed uncomfortably stretched to make it work. It’s a style, I know – I grew up watching Hee Haw and the Grand Ole Opry. I get that. But I can also tell you that the cornball humor is the very least of the reasons Dailey and Vincent are three-time winners of the Entertainment of the Year award from the IBMA.

These folks can play.

The band is Dailey (guitar/bass), Vincent (mandolin/bass/guitar), Jeff Parker (mandolin/guitar), Joe Dean (banjo), Jesse Stockman (fiddle), and Christian Davis (DEEP bass vocals & guitar). They all sing – very, very well. They engage directly, periodically stepping out in front of the stage on a small riser to play in more intimate duo or quartet groupings. They walk out into the audience (you know that’s always a hit) and generally seem to be having a great time with the whole show. It’s easy to overlook the clunky humor and persistent Cracker Barrel sponsorship mentions in the presence of such outstanding musicianship. Dailey and Vincent are on tour now in support of their new Statler Brothers tribute album.

If I didn’t already have plans for this evening, I would be making the trip to Woodstock to see them again in tonight’s show as part of the Upper Valley Bluegrass Festival at the Town Hall Theater.
