There was an interesting show recently on Tom Ashbrook’s On Point – he talked with a couple of ethnomusicologists about Javanese gamelan music. If you’re not familiar with the gamelan, you may find it a surprising listening experience the first time. The gamelan is a metal orchestra including various bells, gongs, xylophones and drums. It’s both melodic and clamorous, and capable of producing a remarkable variety and depth of music. This show digs in to the history and traditions of gamelan – good stuff, see what you think.
