remembering david fanshawe

July 12, 2010

David Fanshawe died last Monday. He was 68 years old, and dedicated his life to discovering and preserving music from around the entire world through a vast archive of recordings he made onsite in locations as diverse as Tibet, Africa, Melanisia, Afghanistan, and Tonga.

Fanshawe collected music, and he wrote his own too. You could call him an ethnomusicologist. He thought of himself as an explorer. Here’s a link to his website, and a bit more on him from NPR.

R.I.P., David – and cheers to the spirit of adventurous souls everywhere!
