baby, it’s ______ cold outside!

January 21, 2011

You’ve heard the weekend forecast by now, tomorrow’s daytime “highs” will be around O°F, and it could be a stretch to even get that warm on Sunday and Monday.

<—-Yep, just like the roadsign says: Look Out For Frozen People Ahead.

It’s a good time to think about Frank Loesser’s great Oscar award-winning classic, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. A few years ago a friend turned me on to the original version of the song, from the movie soundtrack of 1949’s Neptune’s Daughter. Ricardo Montalban’s character is very suave and persuasive as he tries to get Esther Williams’ flighty “Betty” to extend the evening’s entertainment and stay with him just a little longer. I don’t know how she could resist him. (Maybe she didn’t.)

There are many delicious versions, whether your pleasure is Ella and Louis or Betty Carter and Ray Charles or any number of the other duets who have given their combined chemistry a run with the song.

Stay warm this weekend. Be careful with your animals if they have to go outside, treat your car right, and take the opportunity of being housebound to truly enjoy each other’s company.

Wintertime’s a special time,…baby.
