zebu nation

March 13, 2010

Word’s getting out fast about the debut recording by Razia Said. (Just call her Razia).

This week alone the Madagascar-born singer’s new recording Zebu Nation has been featured both on The Story with Dick Gordon, and as Thursday’s “Global Hit” on the BBC’s The World. I’ve been curious which of the CD’s catchy, driving tracks are the ones being picked up for radio airplay. I wasn’t too surprised to learn yesterday that several are.

The album was inspired by a return visit to to Madagascar, home of towering baobab trees and herds of zebu, a native hump-backed cattle population. Razia still has family there, though she moved away when she was still pre-teen. On the most recent visit she was struck by the scope and advanced severity of deforestation on the island, a result of decades of ungoverned tavy, or ‘slash and burn’ agricultural practices. In the span from 1950 to 1985 alone, one half of Madagascar’s rainforests vanished.

In contrast to the bleak situation it illustrates, the music of Zebu Nation is a warm, inviting blend that reminds the listener at every turn this is music sprung organically from the tropical sunshine of the Indian Ocean. It’s made with long, tubular bamboo zithers, wooden flutes, and a variety of stringed instruments not unlike the koras and ngoni of West Africa. Song after song, the effect of these unique voices can be both uplifting and haunting. Though beautiful, it’s a little like listening to ghosts – it’s hard enjoy the music without thinking about the native wooden instruments of Madagascar being just one more of the many potential casualties of rainforest destruction if the situation doesn’t improve.

Razia’s website is a companion artistic effort, a visual extension of the passion and very personal commitment she has to this music, and to the land itself. (Ten percent of all Zebu Nation sales go to benefit tree planting projects in Madagascar.)

women’s day

March 7, 2010

This week World of Music falls on March 8th – International Women’s Day. We’ll give it up to some of the most powerful female voices on the planet today, musicians and poets alike.

Benin’s Angelique Kidjo has a new release, we’ll check that out along with Zebu Nation, the brand new debut from Madagascar’s Razia Said. Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou offer poetic insights about womanhood along with artists from Mexico, Cuba, Canada, Scotland, Mauritania, and Belize.

World of Music is a global sisterhood of blues, poetry, jazz, and world music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator.  Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

what’s new?

January 8, 2010

A few recordings you’ll want to look out for in 2010:Razia Said’s “Zebu Nation” – when Razia returned to her native Madagascar after several years away she was moved to create this recording in response to the deforestation and environmental devastation that had become so prevalent in her absence. This is a melodic, heartfelt collection of original songs sung mainly in Razia’s first language, Malagasy. Beautiful package all the way around. (release date: 2/23/2010)

Arctic Paradise” – the annual survey of Finland’s best folk music from the Helsinki-based Finnish Music Information Center. Generous liners, detailed notes on the songs and artists (with English translations), and of course – great music.

Angelique Kidjo’s “Oyo” – ‘eclectic’ is a fair description of the latest release from Benin’s Angelique Kidjo. The songs range from African folk tunes to originals by Aretha Franklin, Carlos Santana, and Sidney Bechet. Never content to rest on her powerhouse voice and reputation for uncomprimising artistry, Kidjo offers both an adventurous and highly personal effort in Oyo with songs that have all influenced her in one way or another. This is an interesting recording with a lot of appeal on a lot of levels. (release date: 2/9/2010)

Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars’ “Rise and Shine” – one of the most anticipated releases of 2010 (and recent years), Rise and Shine is the second release from the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, and it’s been four years in the making. How does it sound? Well it turns out that a world tour and international celebrity (among music and indie film audiences) haven’t done a thing to diminish the All Stars’ hallmarks of straightforward observations and messages all delivered with catchy tunes and those soulful, pure vocals. Rise and Shine was partly recorded in Free Town (Sierra Leone) and partly in New Orleans, where it was also produced by the noted egineer Steve Berlin. Is there any town in the world whose own history is more aligned with Sierra Leone’s cycle of disaffection and personal redemption through music, than New Orleans? Yes, the Crescent City has worked its magic on the All Stars’ new release. Wait ’til you hear the results. This will likely be one of my favorites of the year. Check out “Living Stone”, an advance track from the disc. (release date: 3/23/2010)
