Africa: a continent of 54 countries with more than a billion people speaking a thousand separate languages, and over 150 native dialects.

It follows that the music would be just as diverse and eclectic.

This week’s World of Music treks across the second largest continent on the globe, in our third dedicated exploration of the sounds of Africa including Zimbabwe’s Chiwoniso, South Africa’s Mahotella Queens, the griot families of Mali, and the cross-pollinated Afro-Latin rhythms of West Africa. We’ll also make stops in Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Ghana, La Reunion, and the Seyschelles Islands.

World of Music is a pan-dynamic diaspora of blues, poetry, jazz, and world music every Monday from 3-5pm ET on the Radiator. Online, or at 105.9FM if you’re listening in Burlington, VT.

Returned to Burlington from Québec City this afternoon with about 10 minutes to spare before the start of the show…perfect! Today we’ll hear music from the province (including Le Vent du Nord and Tricot Machine) and from Dobet Gnahoré’s Na Afriki, following her outstanding performance on Sat. night at the Palais Montcalm. Somali hip-hopper K’Naan’s new release Troubadour offers some thoughtful insights into life in that country, and ukulele phenom Jake Shimabukuro puts his own stylish spin on Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” from the new live recording. Tuva and beyond

Sunday morning here, watching the melting spring snow fall off the trees in heavy clumps. Listening to new music and getting ready for tomorrow’s World of Music show on the Radiator…we’ll check out ‘Alash’ – the Tuvan throat singers who came to Bennington last weekend. A new recording from World Village takes us on a journey with the Basque group Oreka Tx, they went to Mongolia with traditional Spanish percussion instruments and played with native musicians to amazing effect.

We’ll get into some vintage Gil Gilberto (circa 1971 when he was channeling Cream, and Traffic) and listen to new releases by Cuba’s Omara Portuondo, Somali hip-hopper K’Naan, and the godfather of Jamaican dub, Lee “Scratch” Perry.
